Biography

Koen De Preter (1981, Bonheiden, Belgium) is a choreographer and performer whose work moves across artistic, social and educational contexts. A defining feature of his practice is a willingness to take risks in both form and audience, navigating between theatre stages, community settings and site-specific environments. He creates evening-length and youth performances, develops work beyond conventional theatre spaces, and initiates socially engaged artistic projects. His performances bring together performers of different ages and dance backgrounds. The ongoing search for a balance between abstraction and theatricality in dance, often accompanied by eclectic soundtracks, forms a constant throughout his work. His creations have been presented on various Belgian stages and at international dance festivals.

In 2025, Koen received the “Proven Talent” grant from the Flemish Government, which allowed him to step away from production-driven timelines and focus on exchange, reflection and shared practice. During residencies at, among others, STUK (Leuven), Uferstudios (Berlin) and Forum Dança (Lisbon), he collaborated with Lisbeth Gruwez, Philipp Gehmacher, Daniel Linehan and Maria Ibarretxe in processes where coaching, improvisation and co-creation intersected.

From a similar need to cultivate collective practice, he co-initiated FREEDANCE together with dancer Katja Pire, a monthly improvisation gathering for Antwerp-based professional dancers. Since 2019, these sessions have taken place at arts centre c o r s o in Berchem and occasionally at MAS museum in Antwerp.

In 2024, he created 15 Pieces, a dance performance set to classical music featuring performers with intellectual disabilities, commissioned by HETGEVOLG and OPENING DOORS vzw. In the same year, he also developed Adagiae, a participatory site-specific performance with local performers aged between 12 and 70, created for five cultural centres in the Kempen region of Belgium and commissioned by Cultuurhuis de Warande.

For the Leuven-based production house fABULEUS, he created the youth performance followfollow (2022). The piece, performed by eleven teenagers, explores following, group dynamics and social media. The Belgian premiere took place at OPEK Leuven, followed by the Dutch premiere at Maaspodium Rotterdam and the Danish premiere at the Swop Festival in Roskilde.

Earlier, he created Tender Men (2020), a dance performance with four international dancers exploring masculinity, touch and vulnerability. The work premiered at STUK Arts Centre in Leuven and had its international premiere at Julidans in Amsterdam. It was later presented at venues including KVS Brussels, Theater De Nieuwe Vorst (Tilburg), Schouwburg Corso (Antwerp) and Cultuurcentrum Brugge.

At the beginning of 2020, Koen curated Solo Night, a programme of four short performances. Alongside a reworking of his debut ‘Les mots… toujours les mots bien sûr’ (2004), he presented the concert performance Blade Racer, created for Theater Stap performer Peter Janssens. The evening also featured work by long-time artistic collaborators Maria Ibarretxe and the then 94-year-old Swedish-French dancer Alphea Pouget.

Koen’s first full-length solo was DANCING (2018), a work on freedom in dance that also addressed the precarious realities faced by many performing artists today. Its international premiere took place at Julidans Amsterdam. The piece was co-produced by Vooruit, C-TAKT, De Grote Post and Julidans.

In 2016, he created To Belong for Theater Stap, a company in which people with a mental disability take centre stage. The production toured extensively across Belgium and internationally and was presented at festivals such as Potsdamer Tanztage, Internationales Festival Freiburg, SICK! Festival Manchester & Brighton and Hijinx (Wales), as well as at inclusion-focused festivals including KIADA Seoul and Mittenmang Bremen.

From 2015 to 2017, Koen created three editions of YoYoGi at festival Zomer van Antwerpen, transforming a city park into a creative free zone for dance, music, sports and play. For this project, he invited fellow artists, companies and local associations to present performances, concerts and workshops, including Tuning People, Koen Augustijnen, Eastman, Jan Martens, Alek et Les Japonaises, Borokov Borokov, Katrien Oosterlinck, Vera Tussing and Ann Van den Broek. YoYoGi was picked up by the European network In Situ and presented at Travellings Marseille.

Koen gained international recognition with his breakthrough performance We dance to forget (2007), which toured for seven years in eleven countries, and with his duet with 87-year-old dancer Alphea Pouget J o u r n e y (2013). In 2014, Koen created 15 Seconds of Fame, a piece for young audiences, produced by Danish production house Aabendans (Roskilde).

Earlier works include the site-specific performance The House That Built Us (2012), created in collaboration with the Antwerp-based theatre collective UNM (Kyoko Scholiers), and While things can change with Maria Ibarretxe (Basque Country). This show was short-listed in 2011 for Circuit X, a quality label for young talent. The show was also presented at Het Theaterfestival in Brussels, which every year selects the best theatre and dance performances of Belgium and Holland.

In 2010, he created Sometimes it’s there, a duet with Swedish dancer Ulrika Kinn Svensson, selected for the European Aerowaves tour and the Dutch Dansclick platform. At the beginning of his career, he developed several works under the umbrella of fABULEUS, including We dance to forget and the solo Les mots… toujours les mots bien sûr.

As a dancer, Koen has worked with various international companies and choreographers, including Sasha Waltz & Guests (Berlin), Raimund Hoghe (Brussels/Bruges), Fanny & Alexander (Ravenna), T.R.A.S.H. (Tilburg), Keren Levi (Groningen) and United-C (Eindhoven). He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Dance from the Fontys Dance Academy in Tilburg.

Alongside his choreographic work, Koen is also a sought-after teacher. He regularly leads workshops, masterclasses and improvisation sessions for diverse audiences and dancers of all ages, both at dance academies and theatre schools in Belgium and abroad (Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, Chonbuk University of Dance Korea, LUCA School of Arts Leuven, Kunsthumaniora Brussels, South East Dance Brighton) and for organisations working with amateur dancers (Danspunt, Wisper, Zinnema). He also coaches emerging choreographers and companies, offering dramaturgical guidance (Martina Gunkel, Jotka Bauwens, Samuel Baidoo).

Koen De Preter (1981, Bonheiden) is choreograaf en performer. Eigen aan zijn parcours als maker is dat hij bewust risico neemt met vormen en doelpublieken en zich beweegt tussen verschillende circuits. Hij creëert avond- en schoolvoorstellingen, maakt werk buiten de theatermuren en zet sociaal-artistieke projecten op. In zijn voorstellingen toont hij een fascinatie voor performers van uiteenlopende leeftijden en dansachtergronden. Het zoeken naar een balans tussen abstractie en theatraliteit in dans vormen samen met eclectische soundtracks een constante in zijn creaties. Zijn werk is te zien op diverse Belgische podia en internationale dansfestivals.

In 2025 ontving Koen de beurs Bewezen Talent van de Vlaamse overheid, waarmee hij zich richtte op uitwisseling en reflectie. In residenties bij onder meer STUK (Leuven), Uferstudios (Berlijn), Forum Dança (Lissabon) werkte hij samen met Lisbeth Gruwez, Philipp Gehmacher, Daniel Linehan en Maria Ibarretxe in trajecten waar coaching, improvisatie en co-creatie in elkaar overvloeiden.

Vanuit een gelijkaardige nood aan gedeelde praktijk initieerde hij samen met danseres Katja Pire FREEDANCE, een maandelijkse improjam voor de professionele danserscommunity uit Antwerpen. Deze jams vinden plaats sinds 2019 bij cultuurhuis c o r s o in Berchem en occasioneel in het MAS in Antwerpen.

In 2024 creëerde hij 15 Pieces, een dansvoorstelling op een soundtrack van klassieke muziek met performers met een verstandelijke beperking in opdracht van HETGEVOLG en OPENING DOORS vzw. In datzelfde jaar maakte hij ook Adagiae, een participatieve locatievoorstelling met lokale performers tussen 12 en 70 jaar, gecreëerd voor vijf Kempense cultuurcentra, in opdracht van Cultuurhuis de Warande.

Bij het Leuvense productiehuis fABULEUS creëerde hij in 2022 de jongerenvoorstelling followfollow, een voorstelling met 11 tieners over volgen, groepsdynamiek en social media. De Belgische première vond plaats in OPEK Leuven, de Nederlandse première was te zien op in Maaspodium Rotterdam en de Deense première was op het Swop Festival in Roskilde.

Eerder maakte hij Tender Men (2020), een dansvoorstelling over mannen, aanraking en gevoeligheden met vier internationale dansers. De première vond plaats in STUK Kunstencentrum te Leuven, de internationale première was te zien op Julidans Amsterdam. Verder speelde ‘Tender Men’ o.a. in KVS, Theater De Nieuwe Vorst, Schouwburg Corso en Cultuurcentrum Brugge.

Begin 2020 cureerde Koen Solo Night, een samengesteld programma van vier korte performances. Naast een herwerking van zijn eigen debuut ‘Les mots ... toujours les mots bien sûr’ uit 2004, presenteert hij de concertperformance Blade Racer, die hij het seizoen ervoor creëerde voor Theater Stap-performer Peter Janssens. Verder op het programma werk van twee nauw verwante artiesten met wie hij in het verleden samen op de planken stond: de Baskische kunstenares Maria Ibarretxe en de ondertussen 94-jarige Zweeds-Franse danseres Alphea Pouget.

Koens eerste avondvullende solo was DANCING (2018), een solo over dansvrijheid. ‘DANCING’ ging niet alleen over dans an sich, maar ook de precaire situatie waarin veel podiumkunstenaars zich vandaag bevinden. De internationale première was te zien op Julidans Amsterdam. De voorstelling werd gecoproduceerd door Vooruit, C-TAKT, De Grote Post en Julidans.

In 2016 creëerde Koen een voorstelling voor Theater Stap, een gezelschap waarin performers met een mentale beperking centraal staan. To Belong kende een uitgebreide tournee in binnen- en buitenland. De voorstelling speelde in België (STUK, DE Studio, De Warande, ccBe…), op grotere dansfestivals (Potsdamer Tanztage, Internationales Festival Freiburg, SICK! Festival Manchester & Brighton) en specifieke festivals rond inclusiviteit (KIADA Seoul, Mittenmang Bremen, Hijinx Wales).

Tussen 2015 en 2017 ontwikkelde hij het participatieve locatieproject YoYoGi voor Zomer van Antwerpen, waarbij een stadspark werd omgetoverd tot een creatieve vrijplaats voor dans, muziek, sport en spel. Koen nodigde hiervoor bevriende artiesten en gezelschappen plus diverse lokale verenigingen uit om performances, concerten en workshops te geven (Tuning People, Koen Augustijnen, Eastman, Jan Martens, Alek et Les Japonaises, Borokov Borokov, Katrien Oosterlinck, Vera Tussing, Ann Van den Broek…). Het project werd ook opgepikt door het Europese netwerk In Situ.

Internationale erkenning kreeg Koen met We dance to forget (2007), een voorstelling die maar liefst zeven jaar toerde in elf landen, met het duet met de toen 87-jarige danseres Alphea Pouget J o u r n e y (2013) en de voorstelling 15 Seconds of Fame die door het Deense Aaben Dans geproduceerd werd (2014).

Eerdere producties zijn de locatievoorstelling The House That Built Us, een samenwerking met Antwerps theatercollectief UNM (2012) en While things can change met Maria Ibarretxe. Deze voorstelling werd geselecteerd voor het kwaliteitslabel Circuit X en speelde op Het Theaterfestival in Brussel (2011).

In 2010 maakte hij Sometimes it’s there, een duet met de Zweedse Ulrika Kinn Svensson, geselecteerd voor de Europese tournee Aerowaves en het Nederlandse Dansclick. Aan het begin van zijn carrière maakte hij een aantal creaties onder de vleugels van fABULEUS, waaronder We dance to forget met Maria Ibarretxe en de solo Les mots… toujours les mots bien sûr.

Als danser werkte Koen voor verschillende internationale gezelschappen en choreografen, waaronder Sasha Waltz & Guests (Berlijn), Raimund Hoghe (Brussel/Brugge), Fanny & Alexander (Ravenna), T.R.A.S.H. (Tilburg), Keren Levi (Groningen) en United-C (Eindhoven). Hij behaalde de bachelor dans aan de Fontys Dansacademie in Tilburg.

Los van zijn choreografische werk is Koen ook een veelgevraagd docent. Op regelmatige basis geeft hij workshops, masterclasses en improvisatiesessies aan diverse doelgroepen en dansers van alle leeftijden, zowel op dansacademies en theaterscholen in binnen- en buitenland (Koninklijk Conservatorium Dans Antwerpen, Chonbuk University of Dance Korea, Luca School of Arts Leuven, Kunsthumaniora Brussel) als voor organisaties voor amateurdansers (Danspunt, Wisper, Zinnema). Daarnaast coacht hij jonge choreografen en gezelschappen met dramaturgisch advies (Martina Gunkel, Jotka Bauwens, Samuel Baidoo).
